10 September 2026, Nuku’alofa, Tonga - The Pacific region’s National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) convene today in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, for the opening of the Eighth Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC-8), running from 10 to 14 September 2026, part of Pacific Meteorological Week. 

17 May 2026, 'Eua – The Tonga Meteorological Service is installing Starlink satellite internet systems at strategic community centres and the Meteorology Office on the island of ʿEua, as part of the Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) Programme’s support to Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). The installations, happening in May, are designed to strengthen weather forecasting and early warning services for village communities, ensuring that life-saving information reaches the people who need it most. 

The Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) programme has received a major boost with Tonga’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua, graciously accepting the role of championing the Weather Ready Pacific Programme.

Confirmed during his recent meeting with the Director General of SPREP on 30 January 2026, this marks a significant milestone for regional efforts to strengthen weather and climate resili-ence across the Pacific.
