Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) Announces the Official Close of the 2024-2025 Tropical Cyclone Season.

 

Port Vila, Vanuatu – 5th of May, 2025 – The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) has officially declared the end of the 2024-2025 Tropical Cyclone (TC) Season for the Vanuatu Area of Responsibility (AoR), effective as of 30th April, 2025. While the season brought a pair of tropical cyclones through the region, it also highlighted the resilience and preparedness of Vanuatu's communities.

The season, which runs from November 2024 to April 2025, experienced two tropical cyclones which came through the Vanuatu Area of Responsibility.

03 May 2025, Port Vila, Vanuatu – With continuous efforts from the Climate Change team in Torba, the community and team initiated on Tegua Island a groundbreaking - the Ligarak ClimateWatch Trail. This community-led project will facilitate long-term environmental observation, merging scientific methodologies with local knowledge to monitor climate change impacts on plant life and ecosystems.

10 March 2025 – Port Vila, Vanuatu – In a bid to bridge the gap between climate science and public understanding, sixteen Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department (VMGD) staff members have been empowered to deliver critical climate, weather and geohazards updates in a more engaging, accessible, and visually compelling way.

Vanuatu hosts National Climate Outlook Forum just a week after severe tropical cyclone Lola

30 November 2023 – Luganville, Vanuatu - Vanuatu’s felt the full force of nature when severe tropical Cyclone Lola hit the northern and central regions of the country last week, leaving two dead and a path of devastation in its wake. This unfortunate climate-related event underscores precisely why access to accurate, up-to-date information about Vanuatu's climate is so important.
