Pacific Islands Aviation Weather Services (PIAWS) Panel

The PIAWS Panel was established by PMC in Tonga in 2015, to provide technical advise on matters pertaining to Aviation Services and the implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS).

Purpose

According to the Terms of Reference, the PIAWS Panel aims to:

The purpose of PIAWS Panel is to provide technical advice to PMC on matters relating to aeronautical meteorological services including cost recovery, quality management and competency standards.

The Pacific Islands Marine and Ocean Services (PIMOS) Panel

The Pacific Islands Marine and Ocean Services (PIMOS) Panel was established by the Third Meeting of the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC-3) in Nuku'alofa, Tonga in July 2015 to serve in the capacity of an advisory committee to the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC) on marine and ocean services matters in the Pacific region.

The Pacific Islands Climate Services (PICS) Panel

The Pacific Islands Climate Services (PICS) Panel is an advisory group to the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC). The PICS Panel was endorsed by the PMC in Nadi, Fiji in July 2013 and established in April 2014 at a Special Session of the PMC, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

The PMC Panels were established to provide technical advise to the Council on matters concerning the development of meteorological services in the region under each thematic area of the Pacific Islands Meteorological Strategy 2017-2026

Second Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC-2) Meeting

The Second Meeting of the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC-2) was held at the Novotel Hotel Conference Centre, Nadi, Fiji Islands from 1 to 5 July, 2013.

National Climate Outlook Forums (NCOFs)

National Climate Outlook Forums (NCOFs) are a WMO initiative to enable countries to realize the benefits of climate information services. Climate services involve generating and making available to users a set of historical, real-time and prospective information products concerning climate variability and change along with information about their impacts.

Training and Guidance

There are multiple opportunities for training in data management and analysis, the use of software tools, producing tailored climate information and delivering fit-for-purpose climate services. Operational Data Services

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the Pacific Islands region operate and maintain their own climate observation networks. Climate data are quality checked and stored in national climate databases. The data resources below can be used to compare with national climate datasets and to assess regional trends and patterns.

Climate Projections

Earth’s climate and oceans are changing in response to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The Pacific Islands region will experience higher air and sea temperatures, changes in wind and rainfall patterns, higher sea levels and increasing ocean acidification. The impacts of these changes are already being felt, and will continue to have significant implications on livelihoods and for sustainable development in the region.
