Fourth Pacific Meteorological Council meeting opens in Honiara today

14 August, 2017, Honiara, Solomon Islands, PMC-4 – With growing membership and a record number of delegates, the 4th Pacific Meteorological Council began its biennial meeting in the Solomon Islands capital today.

On hand to welcome the 170 delegates of the 4th PMC was Solomon Islands’ Minister for Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, Honourable Samuel Manetoali.

The traditional knowledge is being used by Meteorology experts to better understand weather patterns in the region.

Traditional knowlege is being collected, stored and verified as part of a project by Met services in the pacific along with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (S.P.R.E.P).

Pacific Islands Met Council strengthens regional communications

Meteorological services in the Pacific Islands have common challenges, and these will be discussed at the Fourth Pacific Meteorological Council Meeting in Honiara next week.

In Honiara, ‘Ofa Fa’anunu, Director of Tonga Met and Pacific Meteorological Council Chair said the meeting is a chance for meteorological services to come together and discuss their priorities and challenges.

Pacific journalists prepare for regional climate and weather meetings

Pacific journalists are in Honiara this week for a Pacific Islands Media and Meteorological Services Training in preparation for two important regional climate and weather meetings next week.

Training began on August 9 for more than 20 journalists from around the region. They will also cover the Fourth Pacific Meteorological Council on August 14-17 and the Second Pacific Ministerial Meeting on Meteorology on August 18, in Honiara.

Report of the First SPREP Meeting of Meteorological Service Directors

The report of the 1991 feasibility study on climate in the Pacific region titled "The Changing Climate in Paradise" identified a number of projects aimed at raising the state of climate in this region. Some of these projects are currently funded and  under way. In order to implement the remaining projects identified, the SPREP secretariat has been seeking fmancial assistance, in particular for sub project 4.2; "Regional Meeting of Directors".

Third SPREP Meeting of Regional Meteorological Service Directors

Participants of  the Third SPREP Meeting of  Regional Meteorological Service Directors endorsed the recommendations of  the Second SPREP Meeting of  Regional Meteorological Service Directors, noted with appreciation the progress which  has  been  made  in  implementing  these recommendations, and the benefits which have resulted.
