Weather Ready Pacific brings life saving connectivity to vulnerable communities in ʻEua

17 May 2026, 'Eua – The Tonga Meteorological Service is installing Starlink satellite internet systems at strategic community centres and the Meteorology Office on the island of ʿEua, as part of the Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) Programme’s support to Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). The installations, happening in May, are designed to strengthen weather forecasting and early warning services for village communities, ensuring that life-saving information reaches the people who need it most. 

A milestone for Tokelau – First National Climate Outlook Forum Convened

Atafu, Tokelau, 1 May, 2026 – A series of seven ‘COPE: Be prepared for disasters!’ booklets in Gagana FakaTokelau (Tokelau language) has been launched in a landmark achievement for hazard preparedness and community resilience in the Pacific. Presented by the Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) Programme, implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) this was officially launched across all three atoll islands of Tokelau: Fakaofo, Nukunonu and Atafu.

28 April 2026 Apia, Samoa - A team of 40 people, 35 staff from the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and partner organisations, and five Tokelau Government Officials, has departed Matautu Wharf in Apia, Samoa, aboard the MV Mataliki, bound for Tokelau. The vessel is expected to arrive at the first of Tokelau's three atolls, Fakaofo today.

The Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) programme has received a major boost with Tonga’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua, graciously accepting the role of championing the Weather Ready Pacific Programme.

Confirmed during his recent meeting with the Director General of SPREP on 30 January 2026, this marks a significant milestone for regional efforts to strengthen weather and climate resili-ence across the Pacific.
